The pipeline was severely damaged. This damaged section of pipe has been retained and can be seen here. Both the narrow and standard gauge railway lines were stretched and buckled, and major roads were ruptured. Seventeen people were injured, some seriously. Fortunately no one was killed, possibly because the quake occurred on a public holiday when the school was closed and the shops empty.

Cunderdin Museum in No 3 Pump Station has an interactive Earthquake House which graphically illustrates the destructive power of an earthquake. The fault line crosses Great Eastern Highway almost 4 miles west of Meckering and extends continuously for some twelve miles south and ten miles north. The surface of the Earth on the east side of the fault line moved 7 feet horizontally westward, 5 feet southward and 6 feet upward.

The earthquake was the most damaging of all recorded Australian geophysical events. It was felt within a radius of miles and registered 6.

The fault produced in unique in the world for variety, clarity and completeness. It is the first example of visible earthquake faulting in Australia. Meckering soon became a place for sightseers, with people travelling to the town to view the damage caused. While initially it was thought that Meckering may need to be abandoned altogether, the townsite was partially rebuilt and remains a tourist attraction to this day.
